Observation is a huge part of my art career. I love observing the relationship between structure, forms, and textures of nature. While majoring in CUHK Fine arts, I explored multiple fields in oil painting, photography, video editing and sculpture etc. I found my deep interest in handicraft through ceramic and sculpture making. I applied my skills in sculpting my own realistic ACG figures and artworks. My art study includes how subculture and derivative work fit in the modern art society. I hope to explore how modern artists situate themselves in Contemporary art and Hong Kong society.

My art studies are centered around senses and perception. Recently, I am working on how making art can help us face life struggles and illness. I am attracted to the treatment through “art-making” progress. Through the spiritual progress of making art, we can analyze your thoughts in profound progress. I see myself as intuitive and rational.

Arielle Tse

Participating artist

2019 BA Fine Art, Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, United Kingdom

Arielle Tse’s work often consists of sculptural installations. Objects are made to reflect each other, handbound books with sunken puddles, cast chips and cream, hardened sinking pillows and bent metal, etc. They are made or cast with various materials, including silicone, wood, jesmonite, fabrics, metal, and sometimes include organic matter such as fruit and confectionery. They revolve around an investigation into the inter-subjectivity of objects and human relationships. She explores the push and pulls, as well as the lightness and heaviness of attachment emotions through subtly subverting everyday objects, sprung from memories of touch and function for each of them.

Tse focuses on constructing tactile landscapes through text, material, and attempting to permeate intimacy into poetry and sculptural installations. She aims to pose sensitivity to balance, weight, and materiality through her work, make the viewer question their established perception of the individual objects, and how they can serve as analogies for human relationships.

Through installations and sculptures, IV's artistic interest is rooted in the juxtaposition derived from the complexity of the human body and its soul. IV sees our inescapable and corporeal existence as tragic and ludicrous; sordid and pure. She inspects her own problematic bodily experiences while exploring the interrelationships between Man's original sin and their ways of catharsis.

Probing this specific arena, namely the “problematic body”, all sorts of ambivalences evolved within including sex, death, sacrifice, violence, taboo, religion, mythology to posthuman are being confronted and questioned. As a presumptuous being, IV creates works as a means to seek new perspectives and anticipations of the mortal flesh, whereas the transfigurations of materials are assiduous and humble efforts of the artist in striving for an ultimate metaphysical state of transgression.

IV was recently selected to participate in the TaiKwun Artist's Studio Programme from June-Aug 2021 and she is also currently a part-time lecturer in The Chinese University of Hong Kong teaching Fundamental Sculpture.

Jessie Cheuk Lam Tam

Jessie Cheuk Lam Tam

Participating artist

Jessie always falls into the hole of human feelings. She said, "I want to fill in the gaps with life's realities, and embrace vulnerability as human nature." Listening to the unheard voice of unwanted materials, her work also grows a reflexive response of “whatever they want to be something at the moment”. She is an artist who focuses on failure but not able to face failure in reality. Her work is a game of intimacy, wherein everything is fragile, child-like, low-brow, easy-to-make, and not meant to last but easy to bring along. Such an everyday practice to look at, and live with what we have lost and what we have compromised, she negotiates the world on a day-to-day basis for a hidden process of self-revelation.

She is currently studying the Master of Painting Programme at the Frank Mohr Institute in the Netherlands. She likes to stand in front of free shelves, trash cans, and sometimes stop by a cat. She puts bread in the cupboard to get moss and become a poor artist. She makes herself happy by doing silly work.

Ringo Lo Wing Tao (b. 1998, Hong Kong) graduated from the Fine Arts Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is enthusiastic about juggling the many subcultures one experiences when residing in Hong Kong. Specializing in 2D and 3D mixed-media pieces and installations, he purposefully uses unconventional ‘wrong’ means throughout his creative process, teasing the ideas of labor and art-making.

Through his works, Lo makes desperate attempts with his logic to analyze and reason with his emotional and spiritual experiences, also feeling the world in duality.
